Classic: 1900-1990 Or If the show is good quality, funny, as the "Instant Classic" term could be used. eg: I Love Lucy, Roseanne, Mary Tyler Moore
Modern: 1990-Present "Instant Classics" Can Still Count Here If Needed. eg: Hot In Cleveland, Melissa & Joey, Reba

I don't think it's just based on the time period it was made..."classics" are good quality shows, not just anything made in that large time reference you gave.
